Mankind has been very resourceful at picking a fight. Swords, spears, flick-knives, guns, tanks, fighter planes even germ warfare. But every one of our inventions has equivalents in the violent natural world. Spiders use lassoes, sticky bombs and traps. Insects use poisons and lures, night-vision and heat-detection. Above all, piercing mouthparts, sharp talons, teeth and claws can kill on first contact. But in the animal arms race many of the players have developed countermeasures. The mongoose is immune to cobra venom, the armadillo built like a tank, and many birds can out-maneuver even the fastest of falcons. This is the story of how animals kill and avoid being killed.
The creativity of humans is astounding. We design ever more outlandish clothes to help us attract a mate and even use cosmetic surgery. We can build submarines, skyscrapers and spacecraft. All in all were pretty impressive or are we? In Animals Did It First we discover that animals are better than humans at most things and almost always got round to it years before.
