Parliament has been recalled for a rare Saturday session to pass an emergency law to save British Steel’s Scunthorpe plant from closing.
Sir Keir Starmer said the law would let the government take control of the site and block its Chinese owner from shutting the blast furnaces.
This could lead to full nationalisation later, with the prime minister saying "all options" are still open.
Talks have been held this week to keep production going after owner Jingye called the blast furnaces financially unsustainable.
