In a landmark road safety initiative, Ri Bhoi Police, led by Senior Superintendent of Police Vivekanand Singh Rathore, conducted a large-scale late-night checking drive along National Highway 6 (NH-6) at Nongpoh on Tuesday.
The five-hour operation, from 7 pm to midnight, targeted violations such as rash and drunk driving, illegal vehicle modifications, and lack of valid licences. Over 2,500 vehicles were inspected, resulting in fines of approximately ₹8 lakh, a record for a single night in the district.
The crackdown followed a series of fatal accidents on NH-6, including a tragic incident on October 3 where four teenage girls were killed. Leader of Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma, passing through the area, praised the police efforts and stressed the need for a broader review of road safety.
SSP Rathore stressed that poor driver behaviour - not the roads - is the root cause of accidents, citing reckless truck driving and alcohol as major factors. The operation, involving all vehicle types, reflects a shift from awareness to strict enforcement, with public assistance also encouraged.
The SSP urged the NHAI to improve infrastructure at accident-prone areas.
