I've been looking out for a half decent saw bench but the new ones, or at least the ones in my price range, just look a bit underwhelming. Electric motors that look like they should be turning washing machines, flimsy fold-down legs and self-assembly flat-pack construction.
So this machine gets listed for sale and the lovely old fella who owned it wanted less for it than a flimsy new one so I got it. It's certainly quite old (he had it since 1990 and it was 2nd hand then). But it's built like a piece of naval artillery and will clearly last for decades yet.
The engine is a Ruston and Hornsby, the only one I've ever owned by that make. They are the proverbial brick-outhouse of industrial diesel engines. This one is 9.5 horse power at just 1400 RPM, which is quite powerful for a single cylinder. It is air-cooled, with the diesel tank being off a Lister engine and the intake manifold looked home-made. It uses three belts to take the power up to the 24 inch saw blade, which can be swapped out for a larger one if required. I suspect about 28 inches would be the practical maximum without having to cut the bed.
This is a short video of me trying to start the saw bench up for the first time, and cutting a short bit of oak.
