Treating Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy with Stem Cells - The Promising Results of the HOPE-2 Trial

Using stem cells derived from heart muscle cells, UC Davis researchers may have found a promising treatment for people with the progressive genetic disorder known as Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The therapy which has been tested in a multi-site HOPE-2 clinical trial appears to be safe and effective in stopping the deterioration of upper limb and heart functions in patients with DMD. It is the first treatment to lead to meaningful functional improvements in the most severe cases of DMD patients. Dr. Craig McDonald, chair of the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at UC Davis Health, explains the promising results of this trial.
