When we hear the word Kavu, specific images come to mind — a place filled with trees and plants, one we approach with a sense of awe and respect. In one such forest in Palakkad, there is a little-known temple — the Vembathu Mahadeva Temple, located in Peruvembu. This ancient temple, believed to be over a thousand years old, was once destroyed during Tipu Sultan’s invasion. Spread across about 3 acres of forest, it is said that ten deities were once worshipped here. Today, only three remain, and no regular pujas are performed, which is why the temple remains unknown to many. When we visit now, we can see the remnants of old mandapams and shrines, quietly standing in the embrace of nature. A grand temple with a large sanctum sanctorum, hidden deep in the forest, the Vembathu Mahadeva Temple is truly a surprising and sacred sight.

കാവ് എന്ന കേൾക്കുമ്പോൾ, മനസ്സിലേക്ക് കടന്നു വരുന്ന ചില കാഴ്ചകൾ ഉണ്ട്, മരങ്ങളും ചെടികളും നിറഞ്ഞ എന്നും ഭയത്തോടെ പോകുന്ന ഒരു സ്ഥലം. പാലക്കാടും അത്തരമൊരു വനത്തിൽ, അജ്ഞാതവും അധികം അറിയപ്പെടാത്തതുമായ ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രമുണ്ട് - പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയിൽ പേരുവെമ്പിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയുന്ന വേമ്പത്ത് മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം. ആയിരം വർഷത്തിലേറെ പഴക്കമുള്ളതായി വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ പുരാതന ക്ഷേത്രം ടിപ്പു സുൽത്താന്റെ ആക്രമണത്തിൽ ഒരിക്കൽ നശിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

ഏകദേശം 3 ഏക്കറിൽ വ്യാപിച്ചുകിടക്കുന്ന കാടിനുള്ളിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഇവിടെ പത്ത് ദേവന്മാരെ ഒരുകാലത്ത് ആരാധിച്ചിരുന്നതായി പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ഇന്ന് ഇവിടെ മൂന്ന് പ്രതിഷ്ടകൾ മാത്രെമേ കാണാൻ കഴിയൂ, ഇപ്പോൾ പതിവ് പൂജകളൊന്നും നടക്കുന്നില്ല. ഇക്കാരണത്താൽ, ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് പലർക്കും അറിയില്ല. ഇപ്പോൾ സന്ദർശിക്കുകയാണെങ്കിൽ, പഴയ മണ്ഡപങ്ങളുടെയും ആരാധനാലയങ്ങളുടെയും അവശേഷിപ്പുകൾ ഇവിടെ കാണാൻ കഴിയും. കണ്ട മാത്രയിൽ തന്നെ അതിശയം തോന്നുന്ന രീതിയിൽ കാടിനു നടുവിൽ ഒരു മഹാ ക്ഷേത്രം. അതും വലിയ ശ്രീകോവിലോട് കൂടിയ ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് വേമ്പത്ത് മഹാദേവ ക്ഷേത്രം.
