For Hindus, the day is in honor of deities Rama and Sita’s return to Ayodhya after their 14-year exile. It also is a celebration of the day Goddess Durga destroyed a demon called Mahishasur. On Diwali, those celebrating dress up, light up their homes, temples and businesses with oil lamps and candles (diyas) and worship Lakshmi. Often people will leave the windows and doors of their houses open so that Lakshmi can come in and bless them with wealth and prosperity.
