A Whirlwind of Flights and Flavors: From Sri Lanka to Ethiopia via Dubai & Bahrain
My recent trip was nothing short of a whirlwind, a journey that involved four flights in just a couple of days! It started in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where I hopped on a plane to Dubai. After a brief stay, it was a quick one-hour flight to Bahrain. We then doubled back to Dubai, the hub from which we finally took off for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It was a truly international experience, packed into a very short space of time!
Dubai, with its glittering skyscrapers and bustling atmosphere, provided a fantastic starting point. And what a surprise it was to randomly bump into the incredible Lemn Sissay on the beach! For those who don't know him, he is a truly gifted poet, a broadcaster, and an all-around remarkable human being. Do yourself a favor and look up his work – it's absolutely amazing. His ability to weave words into stories is captivating. That chance encounter was a highlight of this leg of the journey.
Both Dubai and Bahrain proved to be culinary delights. We indulged in a diverse array of foods, from juicy burgers to spicy flavorful curries, satisfying sandwiches, and delicious samosas. It was a real taste of the Middle East and a wonderful way to refuel between flights. The food was so good and it made this whole journey that much more enjoyable.
Finally, I landed in Addis Ababa, a city that has made a lasting first impression. It feels vibrant and full of life. It is truly a wonderful city. I'm looking forward to exploring its markets, soaking up the culture, and of course, discovering more incredible Ethiopian food. The contrast to Dubai and Bahrain is already striking, which just makes the entire adventure that much more special.
This short trip, filled with flights, flavorful meals, and unexpected encounters, has certainly been an adventure to remember.
Lemn Sissay is a British-Ethiopian poet, playwright, and broadcaster whose life story is as compelling as his work. Having spent his childhood in foster care, Sissay’s experiences of institutional hardship have profoundly shaped his powerful and often deeply moving art. His poetry, both spoken and written, explores themes of identity, belonging, and the long-lasting effects of childhood trauma.
Beyond his captivating verse, Sissay is a vocal advocate for care leavers and a dedicated campaigner for children’s rights. He was awarded an MBE for services to literature and is the Chancellor of the University of Manchester. He is highly regarded for his honesty and vulnerability, which he readily shares in his work, making him a beacon of hope for others facing similar challenges. His work is not just beautiful; it is a powerful testament to the human spirit’s ability to endure and transcend adversity. He reminds us all of the importance of empathy, understanding, and the profound impact of our words. Exploring Lemn Sissay's work offers a glimpse into a world often unseen and a reminder of the importance of human connection.
