This presentation focused on the human dimensions of working with myrtle rust and kauri dieback in Aotearoa New Zealand. It is a follow up to the Mobilising for Action (MFA) research project (co-led by Harvey with founder Marie McEntee and Natasha Tassell-Matamua) in Ngā Rākau Taketake, a group of research programmes within the Biological Heritage National Science Challenge.
Mark reflected on Tiriti relationships and projects within MFA, with specific reference to MFA, Toi Taiao Whakatairanga, and Toitū te Ngahere where Māori artists were commissioned. The session outlined how many of the MFA projects operated through transdisciplinarity, engaging with mātauranga Māori, Western knowledge, creative arts and artistic research, social science, plant and pathogen science, curating, education, and Tiriti-based hyphen relationships.
A range of theoretical perspectives informed this project, such as Linda Tuiwai Smith (1999), Georgina Stewart (2021), Alison Jones and Kuni Jenkins (2014). Examples of arts projects will be provided from Toi Taiao Whakatairanga, including the documentary Mate Tipu Mate Rākau (2022) directed by Fiona Apanui Kupenga and the works by Tanya Ruka (2023).
