Nedunuri Krishnamurthy (10 October 1927 – 8 December 2014) was a legendary Carnatic vocalist from Andhra Pradesh, renowned for his classical purity, emotional depth, and scholarly approach to music. Born in Kothapalli near Pithapuram, he was influenced early by his mother’s devotional singing and later trained at the Maharaja’s Music College, Vizianagaram, under Dwaram Narasinga Rao Naidu and Dr. Sripada Pinakapani, who shaped his distinctive vocal style. Over a long career, he served as Principal of several leading music colleges and as Dean of Fine Arts at Sri Venkateswara University. Deeply traditional yet creative, Krishnamurthy became celebrated for his soulful raga renditions and for tuning many Annamacharya kritis for the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams project. He was honored with titles such as Sangeetha Kalanidhi (1991) and Sangeetha Choodamani (1976), and served as Asthana Vidwan of TTD and Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham. His disciples, including the Malladi Brothers, Garimella Balakrishna Prasad, and Shobha Raju, continue his musical legacy. Nedunuri Krishnamurthy passed away in Visakhapatnam in 2014, leaving behind a rich heritage that embodies the spirit and depth of Carnatic music.

This composition is a devotional plea to Goddess Sri Kamakshi (Parasakthi / Lalitha). Syama Sasthri calls her the supreme mother of the universe, lotus-eyed, and worshipped by both Siva and Viṣhṇu. He glorifies her as Parasakthi, Raja Rajeswari, Bhavani, and Lalitha, the radiant embodiment of sound, light, and consciousness. She is described as the universal witness, the purifier of all beings, and the eternal refuge for devotees. In a tone of humility and surrender, Syama Sasthri acknowledges that there is no other support in the world apart from her and seeks protection at her lotus feet, affirming his complete faith and devotion.

Meaning:

Oh Mother Amba, who is equal to you? Oh Kamakshi, please be compassionate to me.

Oh Bhairavi, you are absolutely pious. I beleve that you are the supreme transcendental energy.

You are Maha Vishnu's sister. You are Mother Gouri, Mahesvari and Sambhavi. Oh Mother, you are embodiment of 'Nada'. You are Narayani and Nalinakshi the lotus-eyed.

Oh supreme queen Raja Rajesvari, you are supreme conciousness personified. Your eyes are like lotus petals. You are the divine witness of the Universe. Oh Mother, you are resplendant with effulgence. You are energy manifested. You are 'Omkara' personified.

Oh most pious Parvati Devi, Oh Lalita, Indra worships you. You sustain Syamakrishna. You are the great daughter of Hima mountains.

(Swara Sahithyam)
You are lotus eyed. You are Lalita adored by Maha Vishnu, Siva and other Devatas. I always craved for your grace. I've immense faith in your lotus feet. You are charming consort of Sankara. Who is equal to you in the Universe?
