I last saw The Stranglers in 1979. I had given serious thought to seeing them in 2018 and 2020 but worried that they had changed too much from the band I remembered. Sadly, after each tour it seemed more and more likely I wouldn’t get another chance to see them. So this year, it was time to dismiss my uncertainty. After all, when all’s said and done nothing is the same as it was 44 years ago.
Not surprisingly, my choice of songs all, with the exception of one, come from their earliest days.

I had hoped to record some recent material but the two I wanted, ‘The Lines’ and ‘And If You Should See Dave …’, didn’t make the Sydney gig. They would have been lovely contrasts to those early numbers.
It was a terrific performance to a packed audience who ranged in age from their 20s to their 70s. Some things have changed but really great songs never get old.
