STORYLINE:

Indian paramilitary forces blew up a building in Kashmir's main city Srinagar on Tuesday to flush out two suspected Muslim separatists hiding inside. The blast put an end to a night-long siege as the second stage of state polling began.

The militants had exchanged heavy fire with security forces after they entered the building in the Gogji Bagh district of the Kashmir capital earlier Monday night.

They were believed to be the same gunmen who fired on security forces in the area, killing one policeman.

Three policemen taken hostage by the separatists were rescued earlier in the day.

According to police, the siege ended Tuesday morning when security forces dynamited the house and then moved in to claim it.

Two injured paramilitary policemen were pulled from the house as fires licked the structure.

Violence has overshadowed the second stage of state elections in the rebellion-torn Kashmir which is at the centre of a nine-month military standoff between rivals India and Pakistan.

Militants say the polls are rigged in favor of the state's pro-India ruling party, the National Conference, and fear the elections will undermine their claims to represent the separatist aspirations of Kashmiris.
