If Illyrio wanted to help Viserys take the Iron Throne, why didn't he fund him directly?

Timing is everything here. The time had to be right for an invasion; too late or too early and it would be ruined. Viserys was the sort to pawn off anything valuable as soon as he got it, which would wreck the timing. I think Illyrio gave the eggs to Dany to sell in order to buy ships, but he did so knowing that she, unlike her brother, would hold onto them until the opportunity presented itself, rather than jump the gun and sell as soon as she had them.

Illyrio had no way of knowing that the eggs were ever going to hatch. Completely unforeseen. Anyone who says otherwise, sorry, there's absolutely no way they could have known, especially when the past 100 plus years of Tagayrian history are filled with nothing but failures when it comes to trying to hatch eggs. It's easy to look back with the benefit of hindsight and say they gave them to her knowing they'd hatch, but nothing in the text supports this.
The dragon eggs, apart from the value they had, were also for Drogo's benefit as much as Daany and Viserys'. Drogo paid a lot of money to marry Daany, who he was told was a special unique dragon princess. What better way to prove that she is who she says she is and that Drogo's money was well-spent than by gifting her with dragon eggs?
