In this video, Nurse Sarah gives a quick breakdown of some of the key differences you'll want to know as a nurse.

Crystalloids include hypotonic, hypertonic, and isotonic solutions. These tend to be small molecules that do not stay in the intravascular space long. You need a high amount of fluids to equal the amount lost, but there are no major allergic reaction problems.

Colloids, on the other hand, includes albumin, Dextran, Hydroxyethyl starches (HES), and gelatin. These molecules are large and tend to stay in the intravascular space. They are also fast at expanding it. However, there are allergic risks with colloids.
