Tips
Propofol is a 10% lipid emulsion. Therefore, it has 1.1kcals/mL.
When reading the IV pump, look for mL/hr (not mcg/kg/min)
Example: Propofol running at 15mL/hr will provide 396kcals as lipids daily.
Subtract propofol calories from total calories. This will give you the remaining calories to be provided by nutrition support.
For patients getting high doses of propofol, consider choosing a lower calorie (lower concentration) formula that is high in protein such as Vital HP.
