Whether Violet realizes/appreciates it or not, Hodgins willingly took Major Gilbert's place. Hodgins took care and loved Violet like his own daughter. The novel especially shows that even though Violet shows no interest to Hodgins presence and always focuses on her beloved Major, Hodgins nevertheless cared for her through her ups and downs...and mood swings lol. Ok that was mean, Hodgins does recognize how much all the killings have damaged Violet psychologically and emotionally. Thus he does the best he could to care for the former girl soldier.
