In this first episode of Survivors, I search for England’s wild red squirrels in Smardale Nature Reserve, in the Yorkshire Dales.
With limited daylight and winter conditions, I walk through the valley woodland looking for signs of red squirrels, while encountering other wildlife along the way.
Survivors is a series in which I travel around the UK, quietly exploring the places where threatened wildlife is still holding on - to understand how these animals continue to survive in a changing, human-dominated landscape.
