(Disclaimer this is an affiliate link so I do get a commission) Tdays topic is going to be a tank set up, and one that has quickly become a favorite way to set up a tank for me. That tank set up is a dirt substrate with a sand cap. I love doing this type of substrate in all my tanks now as it is extremely easy and cheap to do especially when setting up multiple tanks. The general rule of thumb with this set up is to do 1 inch of a good potting soil and then 2 inches of a sand on top of that to cap it.

The sand allows for the plants to grow a nice root system and the nutrient rich soil provides them with food to grow with out needing to add extra root tabs into your tank and help give them nutrients until the fish can provide it naturally.
