Marvel’s Thor and Norse mythology’s Thor have some significant differences even though the creators at marvel took some inspiration for the character from the Norse sagas. The first being the physical portrayal of Thor as a blonde, tall and blue eyed being. But the Old Norse text tells us that the depiction of Thor is quite different than what pop culture shows us. Thor originally had red hair and was a bearded and bulky guy. And as much as Marvel likes to make us think things about the hammer Majolnir, it is also different in Norse mythology. Majolnir was the indestructible hammer forged by the dwarfs Brok and Sindri. The hammer can destroy anything it hits, and when thrown will never miss the target and always return to its wielder at will. And also Thor cannot fly as they showed in MCU but rather in the mythos Thor flies on a magical chariot pulled by two goats.
Thor’s relationships are also distorted in the Marvel franchise like presenting Frigg as his mother. But is reality the Jotun Jord, the personification of the earth is his mother and his father is Odin, which is accurately portrayed in Marvel. His wife is the Goddess Sif and have two sons Magni and Modi. His personality and attitude portrayed in marvel also differs from that of Norse mythology. Most might be familiar with Thor as a brave and strong yet charming character and is comic relief to some extent. But in the mythos Thor is brave and strong but he is nowhere near being funny. In fact he is pretty grumpy and serious character and is famous for his short temper. His anger was one of the reason that the Jotuns, enemies of the gods feared him. He was a formidable opponent to the giants and is responsible for killing many of them. He is however destined to die at ragnarok. It is fascinating to see how Marvel have changed the character and twisted it that fits into their own story. But the original Thor from the Norse and Germanic folklore also makes a significant impact and stands apart in his own greatness.
