Ibrahim Traore became the interim president of Burkina Faso in September of 2022 through a military takeover and since then he hasn’t only captured the heart of the people of Burkina Faso, but he has also won the hearts of millions of Africans around the world. In just two years, Ibrahim Traore has kept to his promise of transforming the Country from One of the Poorest on the continent to an emerging Country. He has initiated new Mega projects to transform the country as well as continued the projects that were launched before his arrival. 1. Ouagadougou - Dosin Airport Project
The Ouagadougou-Donsin Airport project is a major infrastructure initiative designed to replace the existing Ouagadougou Airport, located about 30 kilometers northeast of the capital. With an estimated cost of approximately $200 million, the new airport aims to enhance Burkina Faso's air travel capacity, improve safety, and support economic growth.
Key features include a 4,000-meter runway capable of accommodating large aircraft and a modern passenger terminal designed for increased traffic. Additionally, enhanced cargo facilities will facilitate trade and boost the local economy.
Funding for the project is sourced from a blend of government resources, international loans, and partnerships with development organizations, notably the African Development Bank. This collaborative financial approach underscores Burkina Faso's commitment to enhancing its infrastructure.
The economic impact of the Ouagadougou-Donsin Airport is significant. It is expected to create thousands of jobs during construction and operation, improve regional and international connectivity, and promote tourism and trade. The total economic impact of the airport project is estimated at EUR420 million. Construction is expected to create nearly 5000 direct and indirect jobs. A captive solar plant and storage system will provide 80% of the airport's electricity requirements. Maîtrise d’Ouvrage de l’Aéroport de Donsin (MOAD) is in charge of the project. Overall, the new airport is a strategic investment aimed at positioning Burkina Faso as a key transport hub in West Africa, fostering sustainable economic development and enhancing the country’s global integration.
2. The Ouagadougou High Speed Project.
The Ouagadougou High-Speed Train project is an ambitious initiative aimed at modernizing transportation in Burkina Faso and enhancing connectivity with neighboring countries. This project plans to construct a high-speed rail line that will link Ouagadougou, the capital city, to major regional hubs, notably Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire. Designed to significantly reduce travel times, the train will offer a fast, efficient alternative to road transport for both passengers and freight. The rail line aims to operate at high speeds, accommodating a large number of commuters and facilitating smoother trade routes.
The estimated cost of the project is around $1 billion, with funding expected to come from a combination of government resources, international loans, and partnerships with private investors and development banks. The economic impact of the high-speed train is projected to be substantial, as it is expected to create thousands of jobs during both the construction and operational phases. Additionally, the project will stimulate economic growth and enhance regional integration by improving accessibility and connectivity. 3. Modernization Of Road in Burkina Faso
