In a migrant worker settlement in India, a young girl developed a persistent cough and struggled to breathe. Her condition worsened until she could only wheeze for air. Using the QIAstat-Dx system, doctors quickly identified Bordetella pertussis - whooping cough - a diagnosis initially missed because it’s rare, hard to detect, and often mistaken for other respiratory illnesses.
In countries with DPT vaccination, pertussis is uncommon. But incomplete vaccination in transient populations leaves children vulnerable. Like many in her community, this girl had not received the full three-dose course.
Thanks to rapid diagnosis, doctors treated her quickly and alerted health authorities to improve vaccination coverage in the area.
