Downed trees as far as the eye can see. This video will give you a tiny glimpse into the destructive power of T.S. Helene which ripped through this area in Sept of 2024. I shot this video in Jan 2026 on the Mountains to Sea Trail about half an hour north of Asheville, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is where the MST crosses the Elk Mountain Scenic Byway, which connects into the parkway.
This is the first time I have really walked through an area that was clearly hit by some localized tornadoes or very strong wind bursts. It's hard to appreciate when you're driving down the parkway and looking at these hills from your car but when you get out and walk among these giant trees, you begin to understand power of Mother Nature. This level of deforestation extends about a hundred miles, at least. It's hard to even grasp the extent of the damage here.
For directions search for, "Bull Gap Trailhead" on Google Maps.
