Been awhile. Wanted to do something a little new and different.
Inspired by Ben Folds Five, the 90's band that Ben Folds said was "punk rock for sissies". With clever lyrics, vocal harmonies and usually strong piano riffs, I was a fan for their short time as a band -- and followed Ben Folds to his fantastic solo career.
I wanted to tap into a quirky rhythm, a touch of their jazzy influence and Ben's instrumental design mindset. Strongly influenced by their song "Underground" with it's quirky beginning and vocals. I had fun creating this one, hope it stands up to representing the band.
Song Analyst:
The lyrics explore themes of self-reflection and personal transformation. The narrator feels a disconnect between their current self and their aspirations for change. They describe a mundane morning routine, yet express a desire for renewal and growth. The imagery of a new rhythm and the world moving fast contrasts with the feeling of being stuck in the past. Despite the hope for a fresh start, there is an underlying struggle with identity and the realization that change is not as simple as it seems. The emotions conveyed range from hopefulness to introspection, capturing the complexity of personal evolution.
