Director Alex Gibney first started filming US cycling icon-turned-con Lance Armstrong way back in 2009. It started out as a Sony-financed, celebratory document on the rider's return to Le Tour after an absence of four years. But a stream of persistent doping allegations during filming, followed by the seven-time Tour winner's eventual admission of guilt, changed everything and Gibney and his camera crew soon found themselves at the centre of sport's most widely publicised scandal. 'We set out to make a movie about a comeback', said producers Frank Marshall and Matt Tolmach. 'Along the way, we ended up chronicling the collapse of one of the greatest legends of our time'.
