When a person harboring the Mycobacterium leprae bacteria sneezes, airborne droplets containing the infectious bacteria are released. The droplets are inhaled by a nearby healthy individual, exposing him to the bacteria responsible for causing leprosy. The bacteria begin to proliferate slowly within the exposed individual. Although the incubation period may be prolonged, symptoms gradually emerge. Inflammation forms around the iris, leading to glaucoma and blindness. Ulcers form on the soles of the feet, patches of skin undergo discoloration, and nodules begin to develop. The hands and feet become claw-like and crippled, and facial disfigurement occurs as the disease progresses.
