In the early years of the 20th century the ocean liner had emerged as a supreme piece of technology - but as ever, with technological advances came some harsh lessons. Three major ships sank before 1920 and their losses would change the way ships would be built for years to come. After Titanic there was Empress of Ireland, largely forgotten by the looming shadow of the First World War; then there came Lusitania, a darling of the transatlantic passenger trade in her time but cut down in the conflict. Finally, Britannic; Titanic's sister ship, a liner which never lived up to her full potential. This video comes from three major films we've made, trimmed to show just the sinkings and explore how these spectacular pieces of machinery were lost to the deep forever.
Oceanliner Designs explores the design, construction, engineering and operation of history’s greatest vessels– from Titanic to Queen Mary and from the Empress of Ireland to the Lusitania. Join maritime researcher and illustrator Michael Brady as he tells the stories behind some of history's most famous ocean liners and machines!
