On June 30th, 2024, the active setup in the Northeast continued with another shortwave trough entering the region from the Great Lakes. Downstream of this feature, a surface low deepened in Quebec Canada with a trailing cold front pushing through southern NY by the evening. Within the warm sector, surface temperatures reached the upper 80s with dewpoints around 70. This led to moderate to high instability across the area. Mid-level winds also reached up to 50 kts, producing sufficient speed shear for storm organization. Linear shear profiles resulted in multi-clusters with bowing segments capable of strong straight line winds. As a result, the SPC issued an Enhanced (level 3 of 5) risk of severe thunderstorms for southern NY State.
The first intercept in this video was a severe warned storm that crossed Manhattan and swept through the Bronx around 3pm EDT. Though the wind gusts I observed were sub-severe, the storm produced very high rainfall rates, dropping almost an inch of rain in 15 minutes.
I decided to head home after this storm, but ended up setting up for a few time lapses and a beautiful sunset as a final round of weaker storms passed through Dutchess County NY later that evening.
