What began as a steep, erosion-prone yard with major drainage failures is now a multi-level retreat designed for recreation, relaxation, and year-round enjoyment.
A Yard With Major Structural and Drainage Challenges
When Landscape Designer Matt Barron and the Jax Outdoor Solutions team first arrived, the property faced significant issues. The elevation sloped nearly six feet from the back of the house down to the rear fence, causing water to rush through the yard during storms. The pool deck was washing out, drainage was inadequate, and erosion threatened the home’s foundation and outdoor structures.
A complete overhaul was the only solution.
Engineering a Reliable Drainage System
The first phase involved resolving the drainage problems. The team performed a full grade analysis to identify low points and determine how water naturally moved across the yard. From there, they installed underground drainage lines tied into a sump-pump system designed to carry stormwater safely to the front of the property.
Additional deck drains near the home were replaced to prevent water from flowing toward the foundation. Once the first storm hit after installation, the system performed flawlessly.
Building Multi-Level Outdoor Living Spaces
With the drainage system in place, the team rebuilt the entire yard using retaining walls to create four functional platforms:
A primary seating area
An expanded pool deck with additional lounging space
A lower shaded entertainment zone
A dedicated level for synthetic turf and a professional-quality putting green
Precise grading ensured each surface aligned perfectly, with clean transitions and square lines that allowed each area to flow naturally into the next.
A Custom Pergola, Outdoor Kitchen & Fire Feature
To maximize the usability of the new outdoor space, Jax Outdoor Solutions constructed a stunning pergola equipped with a retractable roof system, giving the homeowners the flexibility to enjoy full sunshine or comfortable shade at any time.
Partnering with Concrete Commander, the team installed a fully equipped outdoor kitchen beneath the pergola. Directly between the kitchen and the pool, a custom fire pit extending the width of the pool area creates a striking gathering centerpiece for evenings outdoors.
Pro-Quality Putting Green & Pet-Friendly Turf
The homeowners also requested a putting green—one of Jax Outdoor Solutions’ specialty offerings. The team installed a professional-grade green surrounded by a fringe of pet-friendly artificial turf, ideal for the family’s small dogs who love to spend time outside.
A Clean, Water-Wise Front Yard Refresh
In the front yard, overgrown jasmine had climbed roughly 19 inches up the entry steps, making the space unusable and visually heavy. The team removed the dense growth and redesigned the area using water-wise, low-maintenance plants that thrive with minimal irrigation once established.
