இந்த மாடுகள் தேனி மற்றும் சுற்று வட்டாரங்களை பூர்விகமாக கொண்ட மாட்டு இனம், சுற்றி உள்ள மேய்ச்சல் நிலங்களிலும் , மேற்கு தொடர்ச்சி மலைகளிலும் மேய்க்கப்படும். சுமார் 120 மாடுகள் கொண்ட கிடை எங்க கிராமத்துக்கு மேய்ச்சலுக்கு வந்து இருந்தது. இன்றளவில் சுமார் 15,000 மாடுகள் உள்ளன. முன்னெல்லாம் இந்த மாட்டு கிடைகள் ரோட்டை கிராஸ் பண்ண 10 நிமிஷம் ஆகும். இன்னய அளவுல சுமார் 100 மாடுகள் கொண்ட மாடுகளா இந்த கிடைகளா பராமரிச்சு வரப்படுது.

இந்த மாட்டு வகை இந்திய அரசாங்கத்தால் இனியும் அங்கீகரிக்க படலை. இந்த மாடுகள் சன்னமான மற்றும் சின்ன உடல் அமைப்பு கொண்டது இதுனால கோடை காலத்துல மேய்ச்சலுக்கு ஈஸியா மலை ஏறும். ஒரு நாளைக்கு சுமாரா 1 லிட்டர் பால் கொடுக்கும். பொதுவா பால் கறக்குறது இல்லை , ஆனால் இந்த பால் மூலிகைகள் நிறைஞ்ச மருத்துவ குணம் நிறைஞ்சது.

These are indigenous breed of cattle that are native to the Theni region, and are grazed in the western ghats and the nearby grazing lands. Herd of 120 Theni Hill cattle passed my village for grazing. It is estimated around 15,000 of these cattle are found in the nearby regions. Once these cattle were found in large herds and will take around 10 minutes to cross roads. Now the same had dwindled into small herds with around 100 cows.
This breed is not a registered breed under National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR). The cattle are medium size, slender and compact, fit to climb up the hills during the summer months when the feed is scarce in the plains. The milk yield is low around 1 liter a day. Cows in general are not milked; the milk is rich in herbs that are eaten by the cows in the hills during grazing.

The herders make money by penning and selling the male calves for jallikattu and reckla races, moreover these competitions act as showcases advertising their bull calves. By seeing the ferocious bulls and fast running bullocks, people look for the herds from which it came from. This is a good encouragement for the herders.
