Giovanni Zatara, a brilliant stage magician who became a real wizard when he learned magic by saying words backwards and whose brilliant career was continued to the present day by his daughter Zatanna when Zatara passed away. He's the second oldest DC hero, alongside Superman, having appeared simultaneously in Action Comics #1 in June 1938. Only Dr. Occult is older than them (with Rose Psychic).
#20 a scientist who gets his magnetic powers from a lightning strike and can control magnetism with his headdress and uses it to commit crimes because he was laughed at by the scientific community.
#19 an escaped demon from hell who is after Zatara's soul but encounters his daughter and a younger Batman whom he teaches escape artist skills.
#18 a scientist with his "Mirage Maker"-projector to create illusions, but ends up on the path of crime and is confronted by another master of illusions, Zatara.
#17 A scientist who can control the rain with his gadgets and start blackmailing society with it. Similar to the villain Superman faced a little earlier.
#16 After Zatara officially killed by #4, he was sent to hell where he was beheaded by the rampaging Czarnian and died a second time trying to protect her daughter and her expedition in the story arc "Reign in Hell".
#15 Golden Age Tala was a cruel and dangerous treasure huntress who is after Captain Kidd's treasure. Similar to #1.
#14 A powerful telepath, an Atlantean aristocrat who covets world domination but he fell ill and needed help from Earthlings, doctor and his friend Zatara who had to thwart his evil intentions.
#13 Another powerful world-conquering telepath from 1939, an Indian evil mystic. He gathered other mind-controlling supervillains into his league, which coincidentally included Zatara who eventually got into a mind duel with the supervillain, killing him.
#12 A supervillain who used a powerful melting gun to try to melt icebergs so that the world would be flooded. Although the idea may sound silly now, he is from 1939, before there was any knowledge of global warming.
#11 An extremely powerful cosmic being and the main villain in the story arc "Crisis on Infinite Earths". Zatara joins Spectre to destroy him and capture his minions the Shadow Demons.
#10 A Lovecraftian monster, a demon octopus awakened by a thief after invading an Atlantean temple and successfully stopped by Zatara.
#9 The immortal queen of Ophir, an old hag looking for a young maiden to transform herself into a young beauty through blood exchange.
#8 Leader of Hidden Ones, the lord of Homo Magi-city, who held Zatara's wife Sindella, Zatanna's mother, captive who unluckily dies to protect her family.
#7 The second oldest Zatara foe from 1938, a priest from ancient Egypt who persecuted grave diggers by spreading death among them. He later made a comeback by attacking Zatanna and the JLA.
#6 The leader of the sub-atomic world, an evil wizard with the ability to absorb the magical abilities of other wizards. He defeated Zatara and banished him.
#5 Zatara's old enemy, a wicked sorcerer with whom she fought in the mountains of Turkey that left Zatara badly injured until he met Sindella who healed him.
#4 The great darkness, the source of all evil, which killed Zatara when he, with Zatanna and his magician friends, tried to stop it from spreading by sacrificing herself instead of her daughter.
#3 all-powerful horror monster, creature of Otherkind, the original wielders of magic whose arrival on Earth has been significantly prevented by Zatara posthumously. Although the creature is better known as the enemy of JLA Dark and Zatanna, Zatara actually planned its destruction beforehand by arranging the right people to be there such as chess pieces thus he is Zatara's ultimate enemy.
#2 An extra-dimensional witch, the mistress of the dark elements, who put a deadly curse on Zatara that forced him to flee his own world, from which Zatanna retrieved him with the help of the JLA. She is Zatara and Zatanna's main adversary in the late Silver and Bronze Ages.
#1 Catwoman before Catwoman, the oldest female supervillain in comics, as old as Superman and Zatara from June 1938. She is a seductress, a black widow, a ruthless thief, the first Tigress from the late 30s and early 40s until the next Tigress, Paula Brooks took over the mantle, after which she mostly appeared as a cameo. Above all, the arch-enemy of the Golden Age of Zatara.
