Winter Backpacking in Big South Fork: Cold-Weather Backpacking Skills

On a weekend close to Christmas, 2016, I accepted Scott Taylor's invitation to backpack in bad weather in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.

In this video, I discuss some of the ways in which I deal with the challenges of backpacking in the winter and the cold. I also spend more time than usual in this video documenting my tarp set-up. (Tarps are great--lightweight, adaptable to many outdoor situations, and able to give you views into the darkness all night long, for those who don't like to be enclosed by the walls of a tent or hammock. Give a tarp a try!)

Trails covered: The Angel Falls Overlook Trail and the Grand Gap Loop Trail. Along the way, Scott and I stood on the Angel Falls Overlook. We both parked at the Leatherwood Ford Trailhead.
