Welcome to 'Continuum Mechanics &Transport Phenomena' course !
This lecture explores the intriguing pressure distribution in fluids undergoing rigid body motion, particularly translation. Imagine a container of fluid moving as a single unit, like a tank of water on a truck. In this scenario, all fluid particles share the same acceleration, resulting in no relative motion between them. This absence of relative motion leads to the fascinating conclusion: no velocity gradients, no strain rates, and hence no viscous stresses! We'll simplify the Navier-Stokes equation for this case and derive equations governing pressure distribution. Using the example of linear accelerating motion, such as a container of fluid in an accelerating elevator or truck, we'll learn how to determine the shape of the free surface. Get ready to uncover how both gravity and external acceleration influence pressure distribution.
