Court Slams Brakes on Rivers Impeachment: Judge Blocks Assembly, CJ in Fubara Showdown

A dramatic legal twist has hit the Rivers State political crisis.

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyibo has issued an interim injunction halting all impeachment steps against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu. The ruling restrains the Rivers State House of Assembly, its Speaker, 25 lawmakers, the Clerk of the Assembly, and the Chief Judge of Rivers State from taking any further action related to the impeachment process for seven days.

Justice F. A. Fiberesima delivered the ruling while considering ex parte applications filed by the governor and his deputy, effectively freezing plans to set up a probe panel over allegations of gross misconduct. The court also approved substituted service of court processes, ordering that documents be pasted at the Assembly quarters and served through judiciary staff at the Chief Judge’s chambers.

The case has been adjourned to January 23, 2026, for hearing of the substantive motion, setting the stage for a high-stakes legal and political confrontation.
