Woodturning - The Crown of Contrast

In this woodturning project, I bring together the rich textures of Spalted Maple and the wild, unpredictable beauty of Elm Burl to create a truly unique lidded dish I’m calling "The Crown of Contrasts." The natural edge of the burl forms a stunning crown-like lid that gives this piece its name and character.

Watch as I shape the spalted maple body and carefully turn the live-edge burl lid to preserve its gnarly charm. This build is full of surprises—spalting, voids, grain shifts, and that sweet, final reveal of nature's chaos turned into art.

🪵 Materials: Spalted Maple (body), Elm Burl (lid)
🧰 Tools: Lathe, gouges, sanding tools, and plenty of patience
💡 Finish: Bradxs Tung Honey and buffed to a soft sheen
