Original footage from a trip of young Europeans in 1973.
In the 1970s, young Europeans discovered their bohemian paradise in Marrakech, Morocco. Escaping post-war Europe's rigid society, they followed the shortened "Hippie Trail" to a sun-soaked sanctuary of freedom, music, and rebellion.
Drawn by tales of hashish-infused nights and cheap, tolerated cannabis culture, Germans, French, and other travelers found what they couldn't back home—complete liberation from societal expectations. Musicians like Jimi Hendrix had paved the way, turning Morocco into a magnet for artists and celebrities seeking creative inspiration.
Marrakech became a bohemian capital where Europe's youth shed their constraints in a kaleidoscope of North African color and culture. As fashion legend Yves Saint Laurent famously said: "Before Marrakech, everything was black. This city taught me colour, and I embraced its light, its insolent mixes and ardent inventions."
