I got so fucking annoyed that everyone was just reposting but without any source material. So, I present to you 3 hours of work purely for my own damn satisfaction.
Apparently, the trend has been very popular in China for the last 1-2 months, and I’m sure everyone who grew up Chinese already knew where the dance is from. But for the exclusively english reading, writing, and speaking homies… You’re welcome, hehe 😏
Original performance is from “The 5th Minorities Art Festival of China” on September 14, 2016
The title of that video roughty translates to: “The 5th National Minority Art Performance - People's Liberation Army Delegation Song and Dance Gala: ‘Building Dreams at the Border’ [Military Camp Grand Stage 20160914]” (or “[Barracks Grand Stage 20160914]” for the end bit)
(12/16/25 edit note: lmao they changed the vid title)
The Tibetan dance they are performing is titled “We Are All Brothers”
Tsering Wangdui (Tibetan)
Gesang Wangjiu (Tibetan)
Performers: 黄保 胜 Huang Baosheng (Tibetan) (This is the guy who does the pose!) Gao Yu (Qiang), etc.
I’m not familiar with the politics between the CCP and Tibetans but I think it’s safe to say that they have these Minorities Arts Festivals as way to promote/maintain national cohesion…
Details about the trending music:
The original-original is a Traditional Chinese Folk Song called “Alishan Girl.” Then it was remixed by Yang Music - 羊音乐 in the “Phonk” style which is a sub category of hip-hop.
This is a the first song that went viral (i think): • YANG - ALISHAN GIRL Phonk version (Officia...
The second song is "Peak to Peak, Cliff to Cliff" (my personal favorite)
• Why THIS Chinese Folk Song is EVERYWHERE! ...
• Midu Folk Song - Beijing Queer Chorus (弥渡山...
This is remix also by Yang Music:

Other details I found while searching for the dance (it took me like an hour to find the original performance… Hurray for internet deductive skills, i guess):
There were a few articles published about this event. This one is from a government website:
https://www.neac.gov.cn/seac/c100625/...
This channel operated by the Mainland Chinese government and they posted a performance in the 2016 Spring Festival Gala (I didn’t verify if this was correct). The costumes look about the same, so its probably the same group but they are performing a different dance. A lot of people in the comments were assuming that this is where the viral clip is from. But here, they are performing a dance whose name roughly translates to “Follow the lead! Follow the lead!” or “Arise! Arise”: • Chinese soldiers performing at Spring Fest...
So there was another video claiming that the Tibetan dance is the “First Place Group” from the 2014 All-Army Arts Festival. However the footage is identical to that of the The 5th National Minority Art Performance from 2016. The video itself was uploaded in 2019 and it is only a compressed/low resolution clip, so I assume that this information is incorrect/a false claim:
• 2014全军文艺汇演第一名,解放军男子集体民族舞《我们都是亲兄弟》
Based from info in the video description of the The 5th National Minority Art Performance, they were not the “first place winners” but rather the first to perform at the event. They were most likely dancers/ballarinas just dressed as soldiers.
But here is a link to the actual 2014 All-Army Arts Festival. These service members are god damn talented, so it really could go either way tbh:
