Clare Shore composed “Evocations” for MANA in 2014 as part of MANA’s Sight & Sound Project and was premiered in its entirety at the Festival for New American Music in Sacramento, CA on November 14, 2014.
Each movement takes inspiration from one of four paintings by Fauvist painter Henri Matisse. The fourth movement is entitled “Pianist and Checker Players” and is as colorful and entertaining as the painting by the same name. Shore draws from many of the subtle details of the painting as she creates her unique sound world. At times different members of the quartet are asked to emulate the ticking metronome, brothers teasing each other, plunking of the piano and even what appears to be a sink hole in the living room floor - which in actuality is nothing more than a variety of perspective that is offered in the painting.
