After the collapse of the Roman Empire throughout Western Europe, groups called Barbarians began to fight over power over the land one controlled by Rome. These Barbarian groups brought with them their own distinct artistic traditions often far removed from the art of Roman traditions of realism and verism. As Christianity spread through the Western European world and these Barbarian groups became Christianized, they incorporated their won distinct artistic traditions into this new religion.
