Futuries of Cybernetics
Bruce Sterling
In his lecture, Bruce Sterling speculated on the possible revival of cybernetics, a transdisciplinary field that explores regulatory systems in living beings and machines. He highlights the metaphysical aspects of this field, along with related technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence, while criticizing the Gartner hype cycle for its inaccurate portrayal of technological development. Sterling suggests forming a group to explore four potential futures for cybernetics through futurist exercises and tangible outcomes. He also reflects on the historical significance of pioneers in cybernetics and their personal struggles. Sterling argues that understanding kinetic art, devices and machines is a cybernetic issue and expresses his concerns regarding the aesthetics of these systems and the need for a unified theory of kinetics. In the end, he offers some hints that might be of practical, even daily use to philosophers of technology.
Bruce Sterling, author, journalist, editor, and critic, was born in 1954. Best known for his ten science fiction novels, he also writes short stories, book reviews, design criticism, opinion columns, and introductions for books ranging from Ernst Juenger to Jules Verne. He is the Art Director of Share Festival in Turin, Italy.
