Question: What is whistleblower protection in regards to OSHA?
Very important question and important to understand. The US Department of Labor actually has over 20 federal laws in place to protect employees from retaliation from employers in the event that they report an unsafe condition or behavior to OSHA.
The companies that I've been involved with helping to drive safety have all been very up front on teaching employees about whistleblower protection. Again, this is part of kind of checks and balances and glass wall management. We all want to do the right thing, so it makes sense to let employees know what their rights are in regards to their own personal safety.
So again, there are 20 different federal laws in place to protect employees from employer retaliation. In the event that you go to OSHA with an unsafe condition or behavior. One thing I would always recommend is don't go right to OSHA, give management every opportunity to correct whatever the problem is before you go and report it to an agency like OSHA. But whistleblower protection is there to protect the employee.
