Tradition, longing and resistance of the Kurdish people are reflected in many songs of Kurdish bards. Anatolian Kurdish music is a linguistically oriented music, it develops like the art of speech and requires a special training of memory to bring sound and spoken word together in a perfect harmony. Producing music and verse in the form of folk songs has always been one of the most impressive coping strategies of Anatolian Kurds when dealing with spiritual, social and political issues or social challenges.
The tradition of oral expression, known as dengbêjî, the work of a dengbêj - a "sound teller" - forms the basis of traditional Kurdish music and is the only way for the survival of a language threatened with extinction. For the Kurds, who have no written sources, this poetic, ornate style of lyrics and rhythms of the dengbêj remains to this day a unique method of preserving their language and culture.
Since the Kurdish part of Anatolia is a mountainous region, the music and culture of the Kurds was unexplored territory until the second half of the 20th century. Today, we still know little about the diversity that makes up Kurdish music. Roots Revival Series aims to provide new perspectives into the Kurdish music of Anatolia.
