The Quivira Council's Trappers' Rendezvous is a large, annual winter Scouting camporee, held around Martin Luther King Jr. Day, that recreaches the historic fur trade era with mountain men, trading, games (like archery, tomahawk throwing, muzzleloader shooting), contests (chili cook-offs), and lots of fun for Scouts (Scouts BSA, Venturing) and leaders, focusing on skill-building and bartering with handmade goods, patches, and other items instead of money.
Key Aspects:
Historical Theme: A historical reenactment of 1800s fur trading rendezvous, featuring mountain man characters and activities.
Trading Focus: Participants trade items like patches, crafts, antlers, and snacks using only barter (no money), emphasizing honor and scouting principles.
Activities: Muzzleloader shooting, archery, tomahawk throwing, cooking contests (chili, spam), fun runs, and historical storytelling.
Winter Camping: A challenging winter camporee requiring preparedness for cold weather, often attracting thousands from multiple states.
Who Attends: Open to registered Scouts BSA and Venturing crews, with Arrow of Light Scouts (5th grade) allowed if with a troop and Scoutmaster approval.
In essence, it's a huge, spirited winter campout where Scouts learn about history, survival, and trading while having a unique, memorable outdoor experience. Everything from the brown bess to the kibbler's southern mountain rifle and woods runner to the wall gun
