Wem Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Shropshire, and around 10 miles north of Shrewsbury, is the town of Wem.

Geographically, Wem is situated within the North Shropshire Plain, along the River Roden. Its unusual name is derived from Old English 'wamm', meaning 'marsh', in reference to its surroundings. In 1202 it was granted a market charter by King John.

At the heart of the town is the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul. This dates back to the 14th century, with additions from the 19th century which include the nave and chancel. Within the churchyard is the mound of Wem Castle. This was a Norman motte-and-bailey fortification whose fate is not well documented, but it is thought to have been damaged or destroyed in 1410 during the Glyndŵr Rising, when Welsh rebels are said to have "totally burnt and wasted" Wem.

In 1677 the Great Fire of Wem broke out after Jane Churn, a 14-year-old girl, dropped a candle, which started a huge inferno that destroyed most of the wooden buildings in the town. Two of the buildings to have escaped the fire feature in this walk, both dating from the 17th century.

In 1858 the railway arrived in Wem courtesy of the Crewe and Shrewsbury Railway. Today, the station is situated on the Welsh Marches Line which runs between Crewe and Newport.

Famous people from Wem include actor Peter Vaughan and comedian Greg Davies (although born in St Asaph, Wales).
