In 2020 the method of getting a free SSL certificate changed a bit. Now, you'll need to use Zero SSL and you can only activate an SSL certificate for 1 domain 3 times. (90 days of protection only)

In this tutorial, you'll learn how to get a free SSL certificate for your WordPress site.

Part 1: Registering For Zero SSL For Free

1. Visit sslforfree.com and create a free account.
2. Create a new 90 day free SSL certificate.
3. Choose which method you'll use to verify your domain ownership.

Email Verification

To verify your domain through email and get your free WordPress SSL certificate you'll need to do these steps.

1. Go to your cPanel (this could be on GoDaddy or other web hosting providers that use cPanel)
2. Find the "Email Accounts" option and click on it.
3. Create a custom email address called "[email protected]"
4. Go back to Zero SSL and click "Verify Domain"
5. You'll now get 2 emails to your newly created email box.
6. Click the links in the email and type in the codes given.
7. Go back to Zero SSL and download your free SSL certificate that you can use on GoDaddy or other cPanel providers.

DNS Verification Method

If email verification didn't work or you don't have access to the email manager you can verify using your nameservers.

1. Go to the DNS settings of your domain provider. I've used GoDaddy for this free SSL tutorial, but the method is similar for any web hosting provider.
2. Create a new CNAME record and paste in the 2 lines that Zero SSL provided.
3. Wait a bit and click "Verify Domain" in Zero SSL
4. You should be able to download your Certificate Files now.

Verifying using the File Manager

If the 2 previous methods of verification didn't work you can always try the 3rd method using the File Manager. All you need to do is create a couple of folders in your website files and upload a file given by Zero SSL into it.

1. Download the Auth Files from Zero SSL
2. Navigate to your File Manager in cPanel (I used GoDaddy as an example)
3. Find the main folder of your website.
4. Create a folder named .well-known inside of it.
5. Create a folder named pki-validation inside of .well-known
6. Upload the Auth Files from Zero SSL.
7. Once you click "Verify Domain" in Zero SSL you should be able to download your files

Part 2: Installing Your Certificate

Once you verify your domain and get your SSL certificate files, you'll need to open them and paste in the text inside SSL/TLS section on cPanel.

1. Navigate to your cPanel and find the SSL/TLS option. Click "Manage SSL Sites"
2. Choose the domain you want your free SSL to be activated on.
3. Use notepad to open the 3 files you've downloaded

Part 3 Activating / Forcing HTTPS

At this point your website should have a SSL certificate installed. But it's not activated yet so people can use HTTP and still reach the unsecure sections of your website.

1. Navigate to your WordPress dashboard
2. Install and activate a plugin called "Really Simple SSL"
3. Click on "Go Ahead And Activate SSL"
4. Copy and paste the text from all the 3 files into the respectable sections on cPanel and click Install.

Using this method you'll have a free Let's Encrypt SSL certificate on your WordPress website for 90 days. After that, you'll need to repeat the steps. You can do this 3 times for each domain. If you don't want to mess around with zero ssl and the steps seem complicated. I recommend you get automated free SSL certificates from SiteGround or Bluehost.
