Gray hair is caused by a decrease in melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color, which is a natural part of aging. As people age, hair follicles produce less melanin, causing new hair to grow in with a gray, silver, or white appearance. Other factors like genetics, stress, smoking, and certain vitamin deficiencies or underlying health conditions can also contribute to the onset of gray hair.
Causes of gray hair
Loss of pigment: Hair follicles have cells called melanocytes that produce melanin. As you age, these pigment-producing cells become less active or die off, leading to less pigment in new hair strands.
Genetics: Your genes play a significant role in determining when you'll start to go gray. You will likely begin to gray around the same age your parents or grandparents did.
Stress: While it won't turn hair white overnight, chronic stress can damage pigment-producing cells, contributing to graying.
Lifestyle factors: Smoking is linked to premature graying. Other factors include unhealthy diets, and excessive alcohol consumption.
Health conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as thyroid disorders, vitamin deficiencies (especially B12, D, and folate), and autoimmune diseases like vitiligo, can lead to premature graying.
What you can do
Embrace it: For most people, graying is a normal part of aging. There is no way to stop or reverse it completely, especially when it's genetic.
Address underlying issues: If you are experiencing premature graying, a doctor can help determine if a vitamin deficiency or another underlying health condition is the cause. Treating the underlying issue might help restore some color, but there are no guarantees.
Protect your hair: Reducing stress, quitting smoking, and eating a balanced diet can help prevent premature graying. Protecting your hair from UV damage may also help.
