Probably the most eerie ruin in Switzerland is located on the slopes of the Alps: the Gotthard Sanatorium. It was built in 1905 and used as a hospital for about 57 years. In its heyday, the clinic consisted of a main building, a medical centre and a washhouse. During the First World War, it served as a military hospital from 1918 and took in wounded soldiers and those in need of care. It remained in operation after the end of the war and was used for tuberculosis patients until the early 1960s. As a result of the decline of the lung disease, operations were discontinued in 1962 for economic reasons.
Since then, the Art Nouveau building has stood empty and seems to be dying a quiet, slow death. For in the meantime, the "Sanatorio del Gottardo" is practically a ruin that is being reclaimed by nature. Only a few doors are still hanging on their hinges, entrances and windows are mostly barricaded with wooden shutters and the wallpaper is peeling off the once magnificent walls like loose skin under cobwebs and dust. Equipment and inventory have long since been removed.
With the closure of the hospital came the horror stories. If you believe them, a Doctor Mabuse is said to have conducted demonic experiments on patients in the sanatorium. The fact that the building, according to reports in various Lost Places forums, is also said to have a corpse cellar, should not have diminished the popularity of the object in terms of exploration. On the contrary: visitors to the abandoned property seem to know no bounds when it comes to taking the creepiest possible photos. Skilfully placed cattle bones, a bathtub filled with pig's blood and a scattered salt circle are some macabre examples.
