Description
Autism is not a collection of behaviors but a brain-based set of differences which drive observable traits. This presentation will describe autistic differences as they relate to neurological variations. With this knowledge, we will explore some of the accommodations frequently requested by autistic employees, how to implement them, and how to advocate with employers. The principles of allyship will be used to illustrate ways coworkers can support their autistic colleagues while respecting the dignity and autonomy of the person.
Objectives
1. Participants will understand autism as a brain-based disability and be able to explain how brain differences translate to observable autistic traits.
2. Participants will be able to describe at least five accommodations frequently requested by autistic employees and how to implement them.
3. Participants will know the principles of allyship and how to apply them on the job.
