What Can White People Do? Arm Yourselves. NOW. State Violence and Lessons From the Black Panthers

White people created the situation with Donald Trump's second term and ICE, and white people need to fix it. The Black Panther Party in the late 1960s understood California's open carry gun laws and showed up to protests heavily armed with shotguns, rifles, and handguns. Education and knowledge were core tenants of the Black Panther Party movement, yet most white Americans learned nothing about this history in K through 12, undergrad, or law school. When the Black Panther Party exercised their gun rights, Governor Ronald Reagan and the National Rifle Association worked with the California State Legislature to pass the Mulford Act, which banned open carry specifically to disarm black people who were protesting their own oppression.

Meanwhile, white protesters in Virginia, Michigan, and Pennsylvania have surrounded state houses with AR-15s for years without consequence. State violence has never been consistently applied against white people the way it's been applied against black people for 400 years in this country. The second amendment and gun culture protect the gun rights of white men, but the Supreme Court and abortion bans are removing comfort and protection even for white women after the Dobbs decision. White people exist in a country created for their comfort and protection, with systemic structures built from top to bottom that don't extend the same levels to people who don't look like them.

Learning about the Black Panthers through platforms like TikTok and YouTube is crucial, but white people must be careful not to co-opt movements like Say Her Name, which was created by black people to highlight black women killed by police. Armed protest worked for white guys in red states with lax gun laws. It's time to do things that place white people at risk and make them extremely uncomfortable.
