After doing over a year of research, we decided to take the plunge and switch our chicken coop over to course construction sand. So far, we're loving it! It has been over a week and it has been much cleaner, we haven't noticed any strong smells, and our very fluffy girls have been able to keep their feet cleaner. They also really seem to like it. We will compost the poops, and the sand is a natural resource that can easily be added to the soil once we're done with this batch, which will be about a year or 2 from now.
We'll probably switch our duck area out to sand soon as well because we like it so much.
