2023.07.23 - Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, BWV 147 by J.S. Bach with Improvisation by Ethan Haman

I have been very thankful to be the substitute organist for St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Burlingame, CA for 6 Sundays this summer during Dr. Susan Jane Matthews' sabbatical. During communion last Sunday July 23, I played the well-known piece, "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" by J.S. Bach, arranged for organ by Harvey Grace, perfect for the lovely 1929 Skinner organ there. Since there was leftover time, I improvised a short reflection afterwards for 2.5 minutes. I feel very fortunate to be able to engage in musical dialogue with the old master J.S. Bach, the musical language of my undergrad composition teacher Morten Lauridsen, and my own musical language. I hope you enjoy hearing this mix of influences in this improvisation :)
